Gerrard: We've climbed the mountain

"At half time I did think it was a mountain to climb, but we've climbed it and credit to everyone," he said after the game.

"Thank God for that strike at the end. I had a bit of pressure tonight to put in a good performance and I'm just glad for the fans that I can take us into the last 16 but I'm not going to take the credit on my own.

"It was taking ages to come down and it was spinning and I thought this one is going in the stands and I've hit a few over the bar lately so it was about time I caught one sweet and I haven't caught one as sweet as that for a long time.

"I've waited a long time to get in the Premiership race and I want to get in there as soon as possible so, with performances like that, hopefully we can pull ourselves back in it.

"Fingers crossed, all the boys are desperate for medals here and none more than me. I'm with the fans and I'm desperate for that league title and I want it here more than anywhere else but you never know.

"It was a massive night for me. My performance over the 90 minutes wasn't one of the best but I think that's one of the best goals I've ever scored."
