"You get players who come along and straight away you see they're captaincy material," Molby told the Echo.
"If it happens at Liverpool I think it will improve Gerrard even more. I'm sure it's an ambition of his over the next two years to assume the captaincy.
"To be honest, I think he's ready for it now and don't think he'd let anyone down.
"That's not a reflection on Sami Hyypia though. He's done nothing wrong as captain and would be unlucky to have it taken away.
"I'm sure Gerard Houllier will know the right time to change things and at the moment he probably feels it's better for Stevie to just concentrate on his own form rather than be captain as well."
