Gerrard's right to roam

The tough-tackling 23-year-old has been given the freedom to push forward since the return of the calming influence brought to the side by underrated German star Dietmar Hamann.

The Huyton-hammer's dynamic displays have proved a rare shining light as the Reds' season continues to falter and he expects to improve even more in the coming weeks.

Gerrard said: "I think we've played some really good stuff recently and I'm really enjoying myself in this role.

"Because of the injuries we've had I had to start the season in a defensive midfield role, but since Didi has come back I've been free to get forward far more.

"I feel as though I should have scored four goals in four games now, given the chances I've had. I don't set myself goal targets, but a few years ago when I was playing in an attacking role more often I scored 10 goals.

"I believe I would comfortably score 10 goals a season if I played in this position all the time."
