The Liverpool manager also revealed that he will be going to watch the striker lead out his country.

"I'm very proud for Michael," said the boss earlier today. "To be named captain is a privilege he deserves. This decision bears testimony to the confidence Sven Goran Eriksson has in him.

"He has earned enough caps to deserve to be named captain. Not only is it a great honour for him, it is an honour for the club. I'm sure all the players here will congratulate him when he comes back.

"I shall make sure I will be attending the game so I can watch him lead out England."
