With the final Champions League place unlikely to be decided until the final day of the season Houllier has warned his stars he will not tolerate any poor discipline and that he expects them to give their all for Liverpool football club.

"Players should be 150% committed to the job they have, especially with the financial rewards they get nowadays," he said. "I don't look on how they should behave as a sacrifice, it is simply out of respect for the job, the club and their team-mates.

"Sometimes you can forget what your job is about. The best way to remind a player in that instance is not to play them.

"Every player wants to play. I've never met a player yet who doesn't want to play. When they don't they are unhappy and disheartened, and they suffer.

"Players have improved here because we have a philosophy and a discipline within the camp. Players like Jamie Carragher, Danny Murphy, Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypia and Stephane Henchoz are all evidence of that."
