Going for a Boumsong?

The highly-rated French international defender, who added to his growing reputation with a series of assured displays alongside William Gallas for Les Bleus in the recent Confederations Cup tournament, insists that both the Reds and Marseille are interested in ending his stay with Guy Roux's side.

"I've had them on the telephone and the point of their words was clear", revealed Boumsong in a candid interview with L'Equipe. "I have been aware of that. Their will was evident. Now it's not just me who has to make a decision. There is other interest from abroad, less serious than Marseille and Liverpool.''

"I'll stay until the end of my contract. I won't sign an extension. But if I am to go, he will give me advice for the best. He will tell me where I can make the most impression. Last season, he wasn't even ready to discuss my departure.''

If Boumsong is signed, the Reds may well see fit to sell captain Sami Hyypia, who has attracted strong interest from Spanish giants Barcelona in recent weeks.
