The influential German international, who will start the season as an integral part of the Liverpool side despite many rumours linking him with a move abroad, has revealed that the club's target in the forthcoming campaign is to end a thirteen year wait for the English championship.

"It's been our target to win the league for the last few seasons now and we haven't done it. But I think the squad we have now is the strongest its been since I've been here at the club and I think it is good enough to win the league," revealed a bullish Hamann.

"We had a very good chance to win the Premiership two years ago when we finished second with 80 points. I think we were unlucky that year.

"Last season obviously wasn't as good for a number of reasons but the squad is stronger, we all want to put it right this season, and I think we have every hope of winning the league. I think we are justified with the squad we've got now."

The former Bayern Munich also feels that the absence of Champions League football at Anfield next season, however disappointing it is to face for any quality player, could prove to be an advantage in what is sure to be a tense battle for he Premiership title.

"It hurts not being in the Champions League but it could just help us in our aim to win the title," added Hamann.

"It may be an advantage not to play such strong teams at the start of the UEFA Cup, but obviously not being in the Champions League is a big loss and a big disappointment still."
