The German midfielder has been suffering from a build up of calcium on his shin for some time but was forced out of action before Christmas.

He has put off an operation until after the seasaon ends and returns to light training in a bid to return to the Liverpool side within a fortnight.

"I started light training again at the weekend and did a bit of ball work," he said. "It's just a case of gradually building up.

"I hope it will be a maximum of 10 days before I start full training with the lads again, then I can think about playing.

"I've had treatment in Germany, but the only way to get rid of it is to have an operation. I will have that at the end of the season."
