Hamann desperate for action

The influential German, who has missed Liverpool's last eight games with an ankle injury, has revealed his frustration at being unable to help the flagging fortunes of his team-mates.

He said: It's never a good feeling when you can't play and you have to watch. You feel helpless. I want to get back into the side as soon as possible, but there's no point rushing back. I'm lacking the fitness I need to play in the Premiership but after a week's training I should be okay. It's just a case of gradually building up.

"I've had a calcification just above my ankle. It's an inflammation on the bone. The problem started about 12 weeks ago but I could play through it. Then it just started getting more and more painful until I felt I couldn't play at all.

"I've had treatment in Germany but the only way to get rid of it is to have an operation. I will have that at the end of the season."
