The 29-year-old German international was forced out of the Reds 2-1 defeat at Chelsea after playing through the pain barrier for much of the season. Hamann hopes a summer operation will finally bring to an end his injury woe.

Hamann said: "I've had calcification just about the ankle. It's an inflammation on the bone. The problem started early in the season but I could play through it. Then it just started getting more and more painful.

"I've had treatment in Germany, but the only way to get rid of it is to have an operation."
