Hamann wary of German threat

"They have lost a lot of good players - Michael Ballack has gone, Ze Roberto and Lucio have all left - but I know they've brought in excellent replacements," said Liverpool's German midfielder.

"It's hard to compare the side now with then, but they're still a good footballing side and very capable. They beat Real Madrid 3-0 and drew in Madrid, so they're a skilful side. We have to be prepared for that. I spoke to Michael Owen about the game Madrid played against them and he told me they got a serious hiding. They're a dangerous team.

"Of the five teams we could have drawn there was never going to be an easy game. German opponents suit us better than Italian, but they finished top of a group with Roma, Kiev and Real Madrid, so there's no justification for underestimating them.

"The last time we met Leverkusen I think the fans thought we were favourites. This time I hope people see them as favourites."
