West Ham boss Glenn Roeder has confirmed that Gerard Houllier has spoken to him about the availability of Frederic Kanoute.

Although Houllier would like to sign him, Roeder says the Liverpool boss has now given up on him.

"Gerard did ask me if he was for sale, and I said 'Absolutely not', to which he replied: 'Okay, that is the end of it'," said Roeder.

"When the first speculation started last week I got in contact with Gerard Houllier by phone and he said: 'Glenn, if Liverpool signed every player we were linked with we would have a huge squad'.

"It is disappointing this speculation has come up again, and I don't know who is driving it - but it has got to stop.

"I asked if Gerard had spoken to Fredi and he denied it, saying 'I wouldn't do that'. I trust Gerard and felt much happier after the conversation."
