Hansen: Take Owen off the spot

The straight-talking Scot firmly believes that the England striker's record of ten missed penalty kicks in his last twenty attempts is more than enough to decide that Owen is simply not good enough to remain the Reds' spot-kick king.

Hansen, speaking in his BBC column, said: "He (Owen) should not be taking them - it's as simple as that. If you have got Michael's record of missing 10 out of 23 it means only one thing, that you are not a good penalty taker.

"Some have said it is difficult to take penalty duties off your main striker and a player of Owen's reputation and stature. It is not difficult when he's missing them. They have been crucial penalties as well, in the FA Cup tie at Portsmouth and again at Southampton at an important stage of the game.

"Michael is also persisting with this three-pace run up and he just doesn't strike them well enough. I would suggest Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who has scored from the spot before, would be a natural choice to take over.

"I don't actually think this is a cause for the concern that is being expressed about Owen's all-round game. He is a class player and that class will show itself again."
