The Australian, who was outstanding whilst at Leeds, has not been able to re-create his top form since moving to Anfield, but an increase in match fitness and signs of a return to form have begun to emerge in recent performances.

And Benitez is certain that Kewell's undoubted skill will soon begin to reflect itself on the pitch.

Benitez said: "He is closer to being the complete player now. He came to me earlier in the season and said 'I want to improve, what can I do? Since then we have worked with him on physical work, particularly with my coach Pako Ayesteran and the club doctor."

"I hope he will continue to improve. I have a lot of confidence in him and he is now playing well and has a good approach to things," Benitez added.

"Now he is better and he is showing his skills, especially in one against one situations. He is also good in the area with fine passes. He has played well now for the last half dozen games," the Liverpool boss concluded.
