Liverpool's youth team beat Newcastle 4-2 at St James' Park in the first leg of the FA Youth Cup semi-final on Saturday afternoon. After the match Academy Director Steve Heighway was pleased with his side's performance.

"It's great to score four away from home - that's more than we hoped for. We'd have taken a one-goal lead or a draw at the start, so it's a good result," he said.

"They were very direct with a 6ft 4in striker who's had first-team experience. That was a handful, but it's all good experience for our lads because we're not the biggest.

"It was a good game to watch. We said at half-time that a two-goal lead would be nice at the end - but we went and made it interesting for ourselves. It was nervous towards the end."
