Henchoz hails Liverpool's defensive record

Stephane Henchoz believes Liverpool's mean streak can be the launch pad for success, in the Champions League game against Bayer Leverkusen.

He has been the pillar of the defence that has conceded just three goals in six Champions League games away from Anfield.

Gerard Houllier's men hold a 1-0 lead from the first leg thanks to defender Sami Hyypia's goal.

Henchoz, who spent time in Germany with Hamburg, believes Liverpool have the quality to defeat the Bundesliga leaders.

He said: "It is great to have our kind of defensive record going into this game. It helps your confidence. However we must not forget that you could concede four goals like we did against Chelsea. You never know what might happen.

"Sami and I certainly have a great understanding. We didn't know each other when we started out but it became a good partnership. We understand each other.

"I think we will be under pressure, especially at the beginning of the game. After that hopefully we can make space for the strikers. We have shown in the past we can go to big clubs and get the results we need."

Houllier led the squad in training last night and is set for his first match on foreign soil for seven months.

Houllier said: "We are not over-confident but we have great faith and great belief in what we can achieve in Germany. This team seems to perform better when the situation is intense, when there is a lot at stake.''

Houllier might reshuffle the team as defender Abel Xavier has recovered from a hamstring strain. He could return at the back with John Arne Riise going into midfield and Vladimir Smicer dropping down to the bench.

Defender Jens Nowotny will return to the Leverkusen side after missing the first leg through suspension. But midfielder Carsten Ramelow is banned after picking up another booking at Anfield last week.
