Heskey's got a point to prove

Heskey's current contract has 18 months remaining, but he could be pushed aside in favour of summer arrival Djibril Cisse unless he can put in some good performances in the second half of the season.

"I've only got 18 months left on my contract so I know that every game I play is important on a personal level as well as for the team," he said. "I don't want to go anywhere else but you have to be playing well to earn a new contract, and hopefully I can do that.

"With Euro 2004 coming up, I've got to be playing regularly for Liverpool. And I know that I have to perform otherwise someone else will come in and take my place.

"I heard the rumours about Cisse coming here, but I can't say that's affected me. We're always linked with various strikers, so all I can do is play my best and show what I can do.

"Confidence is so important in football. We've got three wins in a row now and we're moving in the right direction. The football we've played recently may not have been pretty, but it's been effective and got us results."
