Hill backs beleaguered boss

The Sky TV presenter called upon his years of experienced gained as a former player, manager, chairman and even linesman to offer a staunch defence of the Anfield supremo.

Hill said: "The players have come in and not done as well as expected, but what do you do?. It's all too easy to say he's bought the wrong players but the recommendations might have been top class and their records at previous clubs might have been top class.

"It's difficult, because if you get rid of them it's a waste of a lot of money, but if you stick with them, you risk dropping points. There may be more technical leagues, but the Premiership is the hardest league to come into - it is so competitive."

Houllier's hopes of regaining the support of the Anfield faithful will begin with the visit of Hill's former club, Fulham. The veteran presenter believes that the Reds must sweep aside the Cottagers if they are to secure Champions League football.

Hill added: "They're short on confidence and Charlton have shown it's possible. Not many teams have won there over the years. I drew there once in the 1950s and I'm still talking about it. I read a report of that match that said I had a pretty good game that day even though I was wearing a black scarf - I had a beard at the time!

"If I was the Liverpool manager, I would simply ask the players 'Do you want to go to Europe or not?' And then I'd send them out there to knock Fulham all the way back to London."
