Houlier hits back at St John

St John has consistently voiced his criticism of a man he has been known to brand 'the Frenchman' since Houllier inherited the Anfield hotseat from the Scot's close friend Roy Evans.

The caustic criticism from St John came as no real surprise to Houllier following the Reds' disappointing FA Cup defeat to Harry Redknapp's injury-plagued Portsmouth side.

"You knew Ian St John would be coming out this week!," remarked Houllier.

"But being given lessons in management by someone who has managed Tranmere, Portsmouth and Motherwell makes me laugh."
