Houllier adds injury to insult

Gordon Strachan's hard-working Saints, who leaped above the underachieving Reds with this fine win on Merseyside, cruised ahead thanks to goals from Brett Ormerod and Michael Svensson before Emile Heskey grabbed a late consolation.

The defeat, which leaves the Reds struggling to even reach the minimum target of fouth place this season, will undoubtedly lead to more criticism of Gerard Houllier but the Frenchman insists his side are being undermined by key injuries.

Houllier said: "It is difficult to split the result and the performance as we played well and should have won the game.

"We wasted a couple of chances and it cost us a point. We had the assets to win this game and they rode their luck at times. We only have ourselves to blame.

"We are going through a tough period I must say but we were without Michael Owen, Harry Kewell and Milan Baros. That amounts to our strikeforce and our main goalscorers.

"Florent Sinama-Pongolle has had the flu and he very nearly didn't make it as he was struggling."
