While both players have performed excellently in pre-season, they know only too well that their displays in the new season will be scrutinised closely by the Anfield faithful after lacklustre displays for the Reds in the last campaign.

The pressure will truly begin when Chelsea visit Anfield on August 17th for the much-maligned duo, but Gerard Houllier has assured the pair that their talents are valued at Anfield.

Houllier, speaking to the club's official website, said: "Emile and Vladi don't have anything to prove to us because we know their worth and that is why they are Liverpool players.

"I think they would be the first to admit that they didn't have a satisfactory season last year and that was frustrating for them, for us and for the fans. But now they seem to be injury free and I hope they can keep performing as they have been so far in pre-season."
