Houllier calls for support

Under increasing pressure following Liverpool's FA Cup exit at the weekend, Houllier insists that the club has improved during his reign and will continue to do so.

"I hope a big section of the fans know what we have been doing since 1999," he sasid. "We have won six trophies, two of them against Manchester United, one against Arsenal and one against Bayern Munich.

"We've reached the Champions League twice and got to one quarter-final. The team has been held back by injuries this season, but it is developing. We have changed the facilities, the club. An awful lot has changed in the last four years. We have brought it into the 21st century.

"But it is not Gerard Houllier who is important, it is the club. When I leave and at sometime I will leave, be it two years time, three years time or next year I do not know, all that matters is the progress of the club in the last few years. The board know that.

"I know it hurts, I know it is difficult, but the players need the fans whether Gerard Houllier is in charge or not. Just support the players."
