The 23-year-old regained his position as the Premiership's leading scorer with the opening goal in a fine 3-1 win for the club against Peter Reid's struggling Yorkshire side , but his substitution after less then an hour of the clash has led many to believe that under-fire manager Gerard Houllier gambled with the fitness of the England forward.

"Michael is fine. He only trained once on Friday and it paid off because he scored," insisted Houllier.
