The 23-year-old England international surpassed Ian Rush's european record for the Anfield club when he headed home from a fine John Arne Riise cross to save Liverpool's blushes once again in a difficult 1-1 draw with Olimpija Ljubljana.

Owen's unerring ability to find the net when it most matters may continue to keep him in the headlines, but Houllier is also keen to emphasise the improvement made by his star striker in all aspects of his game.

Houllier, speaking to the club's official website, said: "We as a club are delighted for Michael to break the record and it is a proud moment for him and his family. I hope Michael goes on to set a new record that will be untouchable for others to follow.

"Michael is getting stronger and stronger. His overall game is really good. He wanted to play in this match and probably four years ago I would have rested him. I had a chat with Michael before the game and he really wanted to play."
