The 23-year-old scored his 22nd goal of the season against Leeds, but he also created the third goal for Steven Gerrard and performed admirably in all areas of the pitch. Houllier feels that the improvement in Owen's game can only continue to accelerate over the coming seasons.

Houllier said: "He is working on his personal fitness and also working at movement. He's not just relying on runs and trying to beat keepers one on one.

"I think what he did against Leeds was outstanding; his close control, his movement, he can beat players and made some great individual moves.

"Right from the start against Leeds he looked good. What I like about him now is that he drops deep, gets hold of the ball, turns and put players in. He can make that final pass. In terms of that he is now very good. He scored one, made another."
