Houllier: Didi is Hamann for me

The 29-year-old German international, so often the calming influence that allows more attack-minded midfield partners such as Steven Gerrard to express themselves more freely, has yet to make a Premiership start for the Reds since a fleeting appearance in the thrilling Carling Cup win at Blackburn.

Gerard Houllier has, however, made it clear that the former Bayern Munich man still has a role to play in the Anfield club's bid to qualify for next season's elite Champions League.

Houllier said: "Didi is progressing well and needs more games to get back to full match fitness. He played 90 minutes in two reserve games back to back and did well showing his fitness is coming back.

"The last competitive game Didi played for the first team was in early May against Manchester City which was over six months ago.

"I sent a message to him when I brought him on as a substitute against Blackburn in the Carling Cup that he is very much in my plans. He wasn't ready but sooner or later he will be back in my team.

"Didi is a team player and when he is right and ready he will be back in my team. I'm quite pleased with the midfield at the moment and I don't think many people would argue with that. The results haven't been there but the quality of play has."
