Houllier eases Kirkland concerns

The 22-year-old has endured several spells on the sidelines since securing a move to the Anfield giants from Coventry City in a deal that could eventually cost the club £9m.

Kirkland remains the most highly-rated young shot-stopper in the Premiership and Houllier expects him to overcome his injury problems to prove his worth for both Liverpool and England.

Houllier said: "In the last year or so he has been the unluckiest player I've had at the club in terms of injury but I am not concerned about his future.

"The boy will be extremely successful at some stage of his career because he deserves it. I don't believe in players being cursed but you have to go through adversity to become stronger.

"It evens itself out in the end but you have to be prepared for it. Look at Jerzy [Dudek], he was outstanding when we beat Manchester United in Cardiff but before then he had gone through some difficult times.

"It is not a problem for Chris' career. He is still young. You've got to be patient with some players and this will be totally sorted out at some stage."

Such is Kirkland's undoubted promise, Sven-Goran Eriksson included the giant keeper in his England squad despite the Reds star suffering a back injury in a recent reseve game.

Kirkland, hoping to cement his place in the squad to jet to Portugal for the Euro 2004 competition, should be fit enough to participate in the midweek friendly with the championship hosts.

Houllier added: "It is not a worry, he's had something like this before and he'll be okay. It took Stevie [Gerrard] 18 months to sort out and it might be the same with Chris. He is working with a specialist on a regular basis."
