Houllier expecting happy homecoming

The former Les Bleus national coach believes that trio of star performers in Sami Hyypia, Sami Hyypia and inspirational captain Steven Gerrard will lead Liverpool to a famous victory at a apacity Stade Velodrome.

Houllier said: "It's a big game for big game players and we have plenty of them.

"In the last few games Michael, Steven and Sami have all come through for us. I know I can rely on them and all my players to perform when we really need them. I will be proud to lead out such a group of players in my own country. It's a great stadium and a great atmosphere and I would bet on Michael scoring a goal there."

With the Reds needing a goal to maintain their hopes of European qualification, Houllier will pin much of his hopes on Michael Owen - a player who he admits has been forced to play through the pain barrier.

Houllier added: "Against Wolves he lacked a bit of freshness but to be fair to him he had a bit of a knock against Portsmouth in the midweek game.

"He got a kick and had some bad bruising. He played well in the Portsmouth game but couldn't train at all before we played Wolves.

"That was probably why he was a bit tired. But I'm confident Marseille will be a great night for him. He's trained okay this week and there's no problem.

"I think we will score and it will be a great European night. We need discipline, physical strength and character away in Europe, but we know how to handle these games. Most of the players have 50 games in Europe now so we have the experience.

"I've always said when we had our people back we'd be okay. The majority are back now. Only Vladimir Smicer, Chris Kirkland, Anthony Le Tallec, Steve Finnan and Salif Diao won't be travelling today."
