Houllier expecting Vlad to impress

Smicer missed the win over Manchester United last week but Houllier has hinted the player may return against Middlesbrough as the Reds seek a win that will keep them in fourth place.

"Vladi can have an influence on what we need," said Houllier. "He brings that movement and he is difficult to pick up.

"Last season Middlesbrough played at Anfield with a bank of four and a bank of five. Although it may not necessarily be the same this year.

"By all accounts they played very well against Aston Villa last week and were unlucky to lose. They have a place in the UEFA Cup now after winning the Carling Cup and so are probably more free and relaxed in their play.

"Breaking down tight defences has been a problem for us at home this season. In any game of attack versus defence it is usually the defence who wins, that is why movement and creative skills are so important. We will need that on Sunday."
