Houllier expects title challenge

The Reds finished above Manchester United when they were second to the Gunners in 2001/2002, but a disappointing last campaign saw Houllier's men lagging behind their rivals in a mediocre final position of fifth.

The Frenchman, knowing that he cannot afford another season of failure, has assured the Anfield faithful that next season will bring a renewed challenge to the supremacy of Arsenal and Manchester United.

He said: "We challenged Manchester United and Arsenal a couple of years ago. And we couldn't do it this season that's just gone, but I'm confident we will do it next season.

"The last few years have tested our nerves. I learned a lot about some players. You have more pressure when you don't have the right results. When you are able to tackle adversity and solve your problems you become stronger and that is what has happened to us last season."
