Houllier explains goalkeeping situation

"We have two outstanding goalkeepers but there is no competition between them," said Houllier.

"You cannot have competition between goalkeepers, you trust one and go with that one.

"They must feel safe because it plays on their mind and goes against the efficiency of the team. Jerzy's first pick and then Chris."

"I think Chris Kirkland will be the future of this country. I like him and he has improved tremendously and has acknowledged he has learned a lot from Jerzy Dudek and working with Joe Corrigan.

"He needs a bit more aggression, every top goalkeeper must be aggressive - I don't mean violent, but he's a nice lad and needs to be a bit more committed physically."

Gordon Strachan was also impressed with Kirkland's performance in his side's 3-1 defeat.

"There's nobody better than him, he just needs experience," said the Saints boss. "He would get a game for Scotland now that's for sure."
