The French coach is certainly on the ropes as he awaits the arrival of Bolton on Boxing day, but he expects the good times to make a swift return with the support of a crowd he still believes are firmly behind him.

Houllier said: "I am relaxed because I know the good times will come back. The people who lead the club know we are not playing with all our best assets at the moment. They under-stand the situation.

"The feedback I have had from fans has been pretty positive. They have mostly been telling me to keep going and stay strong."

He added: "I have had more letters of support in this period than anything else but it is the players who need the backing of the fans. The manager needs the backing of his board and his players.

"We will overcome this. I know that. It is time for strong difficult weeks. characters and we have those at the club."
