The Reds boss admits that the Worthington Cup victory was for the supporters who have stood by him in the turbulent times of late.

Houllier said: "There is a special bond between the fans of this club and the team.

"At the end of the game on Sunday I was holding the cup and pointing at it and then pointing to the fans - not to the board of directors. I was saying to the supporters: "This cup is for you".

It was a great final, full of atmosphere and tension. I thought the Liverpool fans outsung the Manchester United fans and I think they helped us. We could feel it. In a stadium like that where it is close we really could feel their support."

"At the end when the fans started to sing You'll Never Walk Alone we were all facing them and singing with them. That showed a kind of harmony and communion between the two parts.

"It was the same kind of celebration, which occurred at Dortmund when we beat Alaves in the UEFA Cup final two years ago. That's why I wanted everyone to be there in a line with the fans.

"I have said that I am working in an extraordinary atmosphere, which I could never find anywhere else and I honestly believe that. It is almost unique here at Liverpool."
