Many Reds had been left to wonder where the next goal would come from since Owen first suffered ankle ligament damage against Arsenal that has saw him miss several key games, but a usually goal-shy Heskey has responded brilliantly to the challenge with three finely taken goals in his last two appearances for the club.

"Emile has risen to the challenge since Michael was injured and he is starting to play very well," said a delighted Houllier.

"He scored brilliant goals against Blackburn and Fulham. I'm very happy with him. I think there's a self-belief and strong mental attitude in his game at the moment.

"Everyone knows how much I've defended him over the years and months and I'm delighted to see how he is playing. Even when he's limping he making a good contribution to the team."
