The 26-year-old - who was named in the latest England squad alongside fellow Reds Steven Gerrard, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen - scored his 11th goal of the season in the 3-1 victory over Leeds. Gerard Houllier feels that Murphy is a crucial component in the Reds machine.

Houllier said: "Danny's goal was a cracker. It was a great finish. Danny is a very versatile player. He can play all across the midfield. He is very creative and can read the game well and can defend and attack - he is our second top goal-scorer.

"I give Danny a bit of leeway as I like players who want the ball and make the pass. He does not hide.

"He passes the ball and sometimes gives it away, but even players like Zinedine Zidane give the ball away at times. I prefer players who will take the initiative."
