The 29-year-old former Lens midfielder has often faced the wrath of the home crowd during his time at the club but his impressive displays in tandem with El-Hadji Diouf and Harry Kewell have won over even his staunchest critics.

"Vladi has been a different player for us since he came back during the summer," enthused Houllier.

"The difference is, he seems to be playing with a renewed confidence in his game. There seems to have been an immediate understanding which has developed between Vladi, Harry and El-Hadji Diouf. It's good that we have midfielders playing in a system where they could all have scored goals in recent games.

"Harry has scored, but Vladi has also had chances and Dioufy has been creating or winning a penalty for us. Vladi was involved in two of the goals we scored against Blackburn.

"He's showing the same form for us now as he has shown so often for his country."
