Houllier hails rapid progress of defender

Traore has established himself in the heart of the Liverpool defence since Stephane Henchoz underwent an operation a number of weeks ago, and Houllier believes the French star to have cut out the lapses in concentration that threatened to end his Anfield career just a year ago.

He said: "Djimi is improving rapidly. He's strong in the air and on the floor, he's got good feet and there have been no lapses in concentration.

"He wanted to go out on loan this summer for first team football but I said no. We had a good conversation about the matter when we were in Le Havre for pre-season and I told him he couldn't go because football changes so quickly that he would get his chance and now he is repaying my faith in him.

"He needs to keep his feet on the floor - except when he leaps for the ball - and in terms of attitude on and off the pitch he just needs to stay the same."
