An impressive 3-1 win for the Reds has been understandably overshadowed by both the broken leg suffered by the Bootle-born Liverpool defender and the ensuing row between Houllier and his Blackburn counterpart Graeme Souness, but the Reds boss believes his side deserve credit for their sparkling display.

Houllier said: We played very well on Saturday. We had a wonderful game, we passed the ball around well and created lots of chances. I'm sorry to report that to certain pundits who said I was for the bullet before the game."

"Our shots on goal ratio was the highest in the Premiership before the game. I know statistics belong to the past, but I can tell you I don't think it went down after our win on Saturday.

The movement was Brilliant, El-Hadji Diouf was brilliant and Steve Finnan was brilliant. All the team functioned well.
