The striker bagged a brace, including a bizarre second, to put Liverpool seven points clear at the top of the Premiership and himself at the top of the goalscoring charts.

And Houllier also paid tribute to Owen's 'tremendous' season as a whole, one which has come to life after a goal shy start to the campaign, and to 'exceptiona;' amount of effort he puts into his game.

He said: "Michael scored two good goals, his first was a great effort in terms of individual brilliance. David James denied Michael the match ball with some great saves.

"I think Michael will have a tremendous season. Physically he is stronger and I was stunned by his physical commitment. He works exceptionally hard for the team, he drops back to get the ball and creates chances. Something always happens when he gets the ball."
