The Reds boss had been agonising over which keeper to play against Vitesse after a number of Dudek errors, but after selecting the Pole Houllier had nothing but admiration for the way in which Kirkland took the decision.

He said: "I think Jerzy had a very good game and he saved us at the end of the game. It was important to keep a clean sheet as we have conceded too many goals recently.

"I made my decision to play Jerzy before the game. I took the two keepers together and I have to say Chris Kirkland's reaction was absolutely phenomenal.
"Chris told me 'I'm pleased you made the decision as Jerzy deserves it.' I said 'Chris, when your time comes you know I hope you will appreciate the support I am giving Jerzy'.
