Houllier hits out at O'Neill talk

The Frenchman came under-fire once more following a disjointed display by the Reds in the surprise 3-2 defeat at Charlton - leading to fresh calls for Houllier's time at the club to be brought to an abrupt end.

The Liverpool manager is only too aware of the speculation concerning his position, but he insists that it is merely the work of a 'fickle' British media.

"Had we won at Charlton people would have been saying I was manager of the month. Instead we lost and people are saying Martin O'Neill is back in the picture," said a bewildered Houllier.

"What makes me angry is when people make such clear-cut judgements on things so early in the season.

"The press are fickle and we have to live with that. Let's look at this situation properly. We had won three games in a row, two of them at difficult grounds in Everton and Blackburn.

"Then against Leicester we should have been three or four goals up before they scored at the end."
