Houllier, himself a former manager of the French national team, has joined a growing number of dissenting voices amongst club managers in urging European football's governing body to abolish mid-week qualifying games.

Houllier said: "This is an idea I put forward several years ago. I think when you have two internationals together it makes sense to play on Friday and Tuesday or Saturday and Tuesday.

"It's something I know Uefa are looking at but sometimes these things take time to put in place."
