Houllier hoping luck is on his side

The Reds face the Swiss side in a game that will make or break their Champions League hopes, and the Liverpool boss is desperate for luck to be on his side after Basel's lucky escape at Anfield in the corresponding fixture.

He said: "This is the type of game you enjoy. I have to say we were extremely unlucky against Basel at Anfield.

"We had 27 shots plus three headers, three times we hit the post, we had numerous shots at goal and we had a blatant penalty which wasn't given. Even the Basel defender said it was a penalty. Even Christian Gross admitted his team were lucky on the night so let's hope things go our way tonight.

"There's no other way of approaching this game as we know what we have to do and that is to win. We have to have our mental strength and we need brains out there on the pitch.

"Our record away from home in Europe is not too bad and we will just do our best."
