Houllier: I wish I had more like Gerrard

A late lunge on Graham Le Saux saw the England midfielder red-carded for the fourth time in his young career. While the tackle was obviously rash, Gerard Houllier knows that it was borne out of an intense desire to win - a quality the Reds boss feels many of his team-mates lack.

Houllier said: "To be honest, I wish I had a couple more players like him.
I think what he did came out of pure frustration but all teams need somebody like him, like Roy Keane, like Patrick Vieira, and sometimes those players get into confrontation and get sent off. Steven is a forceful English midfielder. So what do you want?"

Gerrard's dismissal means he will miss the opening game of next season's Premiership.
