"It was a sour victory," he said. "We lost two players. Milan Baros has a broken ankle and will need an operation and Jamie Carragher had a very bad tackle and could have broken his leg.

"We had a dramatic start to the game. We lost two men and they had a sending off and we knew it would be difficult but I'm pleased we kept our head up.

"We knew it would be difficult we showed the character that we need to go along in this Premiership."
