Houllier: Kirkland may stay number one

Houllier had already decided to give the England U21 star a three game run, and he has revealed that Jerzy Dudek may not necessarily make an immediate return to first team action once that run is over.

Houllier has revealed that this point is still open to conjecture: "Obviously if we win the next three games and Chris keeps three clean sheets he will have a chance of staying in. We'll see.

"I have great faith in Chris that he will do a good job for us. He is a good shot-stopper, he is good in the air and he is brave. I like that about a goalkeeper. Chris is brave and aggressive and that's a good thing.

"We brought him here because we knew he would turn into an outstanding goalkeeper. His game has come on over the past months and he is ready for this chance now."
