The Reds boss, never one to believe that some excuses can be used once too often, fell back once again on the apparant inexperience of his side.

He said: "The players need me now more than ever. Some of them are very young and I will stick by them because I believe in them.

"I told them after the game that they are in a very trusting environment at this club. Everybody will stand by them and help them as much as they can.

"Obviously we are struggling at the moment. We just need a win from somewhere, but I have to be honest and say we didn't deserve to beat Aston Villa. They gave us a good football game and deserved a point."
