The central defensive partnership, so often he solid foundations upon which Gerard Houllier has placed his faith, gave an anxious Anfield faithful a timely reminder of their talents by foiling the considerable threat of the likes of Saha and Giggs last week.

Both Henchoz and former captain Hyypia have endured indifferent seasins by their high standards, with many onlookers feeling that the famous defensive duo should be separated if the Ress are to regai their solidiy of recent seasons.

According to their Anfield manager, however, both can seal their futures at the club in the remaining games of Liverpool's quest for Champions League football.

Houllier said: "The win against Manchester United is as well as Sami has played this season. He reacted to the decision to give the captaincy to Steven Gerrard as a team player earlier in the season. His response was one of a player of class.

"I'm pleased with the way the partner-ship with Stephane Henchoz is going. They defended much higher last week. Stephane has responded well since coming back into the team. The pair of them didn't put a foot wrong on Saturday."
