Houllier: Owen is vital for England

"If you look at the number of goals Michael has scored for England, he is vital for every game they play, whether home or away," said Houllier. "He simply scores goals for England."

The Football Association are optimistic that Owen will recover in time for Saturday's Euro 2004 qualifier.

"Liverpool have stated the chances of Michael being available are 50-50, but we see that as positive," said a spokesman.

"We will have further discussions on Monday before we look forward to seeing Michael at the team hotel on Tuesday."
