Houllier picks up manager award

The Liverpool boss won the award after three wins against Chelsea, Leeds and Spurs, putting them top of the Premiership as others dropped points.

A spokesman for the award panel said: "While other title contenders are faltering it is Gerard Houllier's men who just keep winning.

"The only team to remain undefeated all season, Liverpool have won their last six matches and show no sign of abating. His tactical knowledge and shrewd management have served him well and it would come as no surprise if the current table-toppers end the season as champions."

And Houllier himself was pleased with the award, but dedicated the award to the players responsible for Liverpool's excellent start to the season.

He said: "I am happy for this award but I would be happier if Michael had won Player of the Month."

"I'm taking nothing away from Gianfranco Zola, but I do think for what Michael achieved in recent games he should have been Player of the Month."

"I think it would have been better if he had won that because it would not have only been for him, but also for the team."

"My award goes straight to the players and the squad. I want to share it with them and my staff because of the way we have worked."

"The good record is down to the players and we have built a team behind the team. When a manager wins things like this I have enough experience to know he does not do it on his own."

"I want to also thank the fans and the board and all those who have been supporting us. This award is a recognition of the players' performances off the field."

"A club is like a ship and when you're on the right course it's not only down to the captain but the whole crew and everyone who has helped build it in the first place."
